The last weekend of March we stayed on the Oregon Coast.
An extraordinary event occurred on the first day of our visit. The sky was extremely clear.
While taking photos of the sun setting into the ocean, I finally was successful at seeing the rare phenomenon of the “green flash”.
This occurs just as the sun sets in the thick layers of the earth’s atmosphere. The concentrated atmosphere acts like a weak prism, breaking up the last slivers of light into a spectrum. This enables the green end of the spectrum to remain visible for a little longer, causing a “green flash.”
What a fascinating way to watch a sunset. And, what a nice way to start our weekend vacation to the Coast.

I really got lucky on the day I captured the green flash. Extremely clear skies and great atmospheric conditions helped immensely.

Thank you for posting this picture. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of this phenomena and looked for it. I’ve met several others who’ve seen it but told me it happens so fast it is easy to miss and almost impossible to capture. Now I really know what to look for.

I had heard about the green flash before, but thought it was an old wives’ tale until I took this photograph. Like you say, you learn something new every day.
