On the first weekend in June I decided to drive to the Oak Island Wildlife Area to see if a pair of bald eagles were still on their nest. The island is located in the middle of Sauvie Island about 15 crow-flying miles northwest of home. It’s odd having an island in an island, but Sturgeon Lake is enclosed within Sauvie Island, and Oak Island is within Sturgeon Lake. In any event, a road leads across a dike providing access to the trailhead.

The three-mile Trail meanders around the northern perimeter of the Island for the most part. Soon I began passing some bushes and trees displaying blossoms of various sizes, colors and pleasant fragrances. Before reaching the end of the Island, I spotted the bald eagle’s nest located in the top of a large oak tree, but they and their eaglets were nowhere to be seen. Coming around the back of the Island, I enjoyed the sight of many wild roses in bloom. As usual, the hike made for a nice outing on a pleasant spring day.
