In early October I spent five days in the John Day country. On the fifth day of the trip I journeyed to the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. I had been there on the second day of my journey, but had been hindered mightily by a nasty cold. This day I was feeling much better.
I began by hiking the scenic Carroll Rim Trail.
The Painted Hills are fabulous, but I also am quite fond of the western fence lizard.
Snakes and rabbits are coming up in the next several blog posts. Be ready.
