North to Alaska VI

Chapter VI

On Friday, the 12th day of the trip, we packed up and headed toward Price William Sound, 366 miles due south of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway.  The Richardson Highway follows the Trans-Alaska Pipeline all the way to Valdez.

For most of the day it was cloudy with intermittent rains. Thankfully, at Glennallen the weather began to break and the sun appeared as we neared Thompson Pass.

At the Pass we enjoyed spectacular views of the Chugach Mountains, Worthington Glacier, Keystone Glacier and Worthington Lake. Thompson Pass is relatively low at 2,700 feet but is above timberline. This location holds the extreme snowfall record for Alaska at 975 inches recorded in the 1952-53 season.

After enjoying the scenery at the Pass, we began the drive down to Valdez. Of course, we had to stop and take some photos of Bridal Veil and Horsetail Falls.

To me, the entire area had the looks and feel of the Alps. It’s difficult to imagine more jaw-dropping, amazing vistas anywhere in the world.

  1. Gorgeous photos–how did you manage the clear weather?

  2. John,
We don’t have anything even close to this Alaska trip, but we do have some amazing hiking trails both on shore and off shore on the Channel Islands. So someday plane a trip to Ventura my friend Alan Koch and I would love to host you on these hiking trails.
See you November 1st when our grandson PJ and Idaho State plays Portland State in Football.
    Thanks & God Bless
