On a late February day I did the four-mile loop hike in the Tualatin Hills Nature Park a few miles west of home in the heart of the city of Beaverton.
The 222-acre Park surrounds the confluence of Cedar Mill Creek and Beaverton Creek.
Early in the hike several photographers in a group told me of an owl perched in a tree on the other side of the Park.
Due to the varied habitat, I was able to spot several different wildflowers in bloom, ducks, a bunny and many small birds.
But, I kept my eyes open for the owl. Finally, to my surprise, I spotted a barred owl mostly hidden in the branches of a Douglas fir.
I was lucky. Owls are very difficult to spot and even more difficult to get good photos of.
