Wow! Golden balsamroot covering the southern and eastern-facing slopes of the Memaloose Hills west of Mosier.
Bees, butterflies and colorful wildflowers too plentiful and varied to count. Dramatic purples, blues, reds, whites and yellows dotted the landscape.
The warm sunshine brought out the wonderful smells of the rich soils and fragrant flowers.
We truly enjoyed the outing, commenting to each other that the floral show was about as good as we’ve seen.
I hope the photographs capture a semblance of the beauty of the day.

What a gorgeous hike. We are just starting to see the first signs of spring here in Chicago, so I am jealous of the beautiful flowers that you are already getting to see and photograph–not to mention the spectacular scenery! Well done!
Thanks for the kind words. The next few months I’ll be following the wildflowers as they bloom higher and higher, and move from east to west. It’s one of the joys of hiking in the Portland area.

The trail is called Memaloose Hills. It begins a few miles east of Mosier off the old highway. It’s a beautiful area to hike. Park at the Memaloose Overlook site, walk across the road to the south and follow the trails.
