After a couple of days of business meetings, it was time to enjoy some of the amazing scenery near Las Vegas.
My old friend Dan, the world’s best tour guide, took me to the Valley of Fire. The park gets its name from red sandstone formations (Aztec Redstone) which often appear to be on fire when the bright desert sun is shining on them.
Valley of Fire is a popular location for shooting commercials and movies. Scenes from Viva Las Vegas, Total Recall and the death of Star Trek Captain Kirk were filmed here.
The Anasazi were in this area at one time and petroglyphs are evident throughout the park.
On this trip Dan and I hiked along a trail through a pretty canyon that would have ultimately ended at Mouse’s Tank. Dan pointed out the many petroglyphs that were easily visible. For some reason I had missed them entirely on my previous hikes through the canyon.
It always pays to keep one’s eyes open and pay attention to the surroundings.

We visited this park twice and enjoyed it both time though the first time was in August and it was way too hot to do any serious hiking…Nice pics. (Suzanne)
Thanks for the kind words. It’s much nicer to visit the park in late fall, winter or early spring when the weather is cooler.
