Early winter on the eastern side of the Cascades is like a world apart from the Portland area.
I especially enjoy the south-facing slopes of the lower foothills. Many times the snow has melted (or blown off) the exposed areas.
Mule deer are commonly spotted due to the easy access to food, and the warmth from the midday sun.
Smaller birds, elk and coyotes are often seen too.
I’m always rejuvenated after spending a few hours with the deer.
Happy New Year!
Beautiful! I hiked to the top of Staker Butte a couple days ago. No breeze, clear skies, and the views of Mt Adams and Mt Hood were amazing.
It’s a great part of the world, isn’t it?
