Great Blue Herons

The Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is located a few miles southwest of town. It’s one of only a handful of urban wildlife refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Since 1992 the Federal government and volunteers have been working to turn the Refuge back to a more natural state within the floodplain of the Tualatin River Basin. I give them lots of credit. They have done an excellent job so far.

We took advantage of a nice spring day to hike three miles in the Refuge while enjoying the birds, wildflowers and the oak tree-dominated wetlands.

The highlight was watching a pair of red-winged blackbirds continue to harass a great blue heron. They caused it to move a few times but not for far.

It is always a nice place to visit.
