Tualatin Hills

Another cold, overcast day in the Rose City. A good time for a four-mile hike in the nearby Tualatin Hills Nature Park.

With its remarkably diverse habitat of wetlands, forests, ponds and streams, there is always a small bird or migratory waterfowl to be seen.

The trails were in good shape and led to many interesting viewing areas.

I was delighted to spot a pileated woodpecker pounding on a tree near the trail. The bird’s name comes from its prominent red crest. It’s our largest woodpecker, about the size of a crow.

Walking back to my car I couldn’t help but think that springtime is near.
