The Dalles Mountain Ranch
It was a chilly start on the east side of the mountains, 18 degrees and a light breeze. I decided to do some exploring at the Dalles Mountain Ranch State Park in the Columbia Hills.
In late spring the Hills will be covered in golden balsamroot, red paintbrush and purple lupine. In contrast in early December it was a stark, beautiful scene with patches of snow on the ground.
The views were spectacular, with the Columbia River stretching far to the east.
On the way home I photographed a few blacktail deer. They are always a pleasure to see.

The picture of Mt. Hood from the Columbia Hills reminds me of the beginning of a suspenseful movie. It really paints the picture of a cold wintry day and a long trek ahead. It is absolutely stunning.
