Wildcat Mountain

The Buxton area west of Portland was settled by Henry t. Buxton in 1884, and the town was named for his family, including his father, also named Henry Buxton, a pioneer of 1841. The samll town is visible from the summit of Wildcat Mountain in the Coastal Range.

In mid-May, I returned to the 10-mile out-and-back hike to the top of Wildcat Mountain. The trail consists of logging roads. For once the gate at the trailhead was open due to work being done by the Oregon Department of Forestry. They made several runs up and down the road to a large rock quarry underneath the summit, collecting large boulders for their dump trucks.

As I steadily climbed, there were a variety of wildflowers in bloom. I also spotted a few fresh elk tracks, but no critters were to be seen.

After arriving at at the large rock quarry, I climbed a steep road to the summit.

There was a nice view of the little town of Buxton far below, and vistas extending all the way to the Willamette Valley.

A nice respite from the coronavirus outbreak.
