Southwest Desert Trip IX: Island of the Sky in Canyonlands

Mesa Arch

The morning of the last day of April and the sixth day of the trip found us on the road to the Island of the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park. The temperature had dropped and some clouds were moving in.

The Island of the Sky is a broad mesa wedged between the Green and Colorado River Canyons. Roughly 1,200 feet below the mesa is the White Rim, a nearly continuous sandstone bench, and another 1,000 feet below the bench are the two rivers.

We stopped at the Grand View Point, listened to a Park host discuss the geology of the area, and took a hike to an overlook of the Colorado River Canyon and the White Rim. Then we drove to the Green River Overlook and the Mesa Arch Trailhead. The hike to the Arch was short but scenic. The Arch is on the mesa rim, framing the rock formations below and the La Sal Mountains in the distance.

Moab

We returned the 30 miles to Moab. Breaking out the bicycles, the remainder of the afternoon was spent enjoying the bike paths and exploring the shops in town. After working up a sufficient appetite, the Moab Brewery provided another fine dinner.
