Multnomah Channel in the Wintertime

Columbia River

The Multnomah Channel is a 21-mile arm of the Willamette River. It diverges from the main river in North Portland. The channel then flows around Sauvie Island before meeting the Columbia River near the city of St. Helens.

There are moorages, marinas and parks along the Channel. It’s also a poplar place to fish for salmon and other species.

Sauvie Island

An easy way to access the Multnomah Channel is to drive to Sauvie Island, one of the largest river islands in the country. Many migratory birds can be seen on the island during the winter, including bald eagles, egrets, sandhill cranes, tundra swans and geese by the thousands. It’s a bird lovers paradise.
