Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail: Sourdough Gap

Sheep Lake

In early summer, I stayed a few days at rustic Whistlin’ Jack’s Lodge. It provides easy access to the William O. Douglas Wilderness and Mt. Rainier National Park.

On the thid morning, I drove to the Pacific Crest Trailhead at the summit of 5,340-foot Chinook Pass. It was a cloudy morning and there had been thunderstorms during the night. Unlike the previous day, I didn’t have much company at the trailhead.

I planned to head north on the PCT. The previous day I had headed south before making a loop around Naches Peak.

My first destination was Sheep Lake. It has a reputation of being one of the more scenic areas to camp and rest along the PCT.

I wasn’t disappointed. There were many wildflowers along the trail. And, the lake sat in a very pretty basin below a series of peaks.  At 700 feet above the lake amd 1 1/2 miles further on the PCT, was my next destination. It was Sourdough Gap, a notch in the cliffs with great views.  This was my stopping point today, but I have hiked the PCT further north various times. The trail descends and then traverses alpine ridges toward Bear Gap and Crystal Lakes. Truly an enjoyable area to visit.

After taking in the amazing views, I turned around and took a leisurely hike back to the trailhead. I was a little sad knowing that the next day I would be heading home. But, what great memories!
