A Wilderness Hike to Matthieu Lakes

McKenzie Pass

The morning was cool and sunny in Sisters as I began the drive to the trailhead. I took the highway that parallels an 1860s wagon route. After a winding ascent, I emerged from the forest, and the vistas were breathtaking. Mount Washington stood above a 65-square-mile lava flow, while Mt. Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack were visible on the horizon.

Soon I turned off the highway into the 5,280-foot trailhead parking lot for the Pacific Crest Trail. Evidence of a major 2017 wildfire was evident everywhere. However, it was encouraging to see new trees and bushes emerging among the dead and fallen timber.

I joined the PCT and began hiking south. The trail was well-maintained, considering the numerous blowdowns that had needed to be cleared due to the intense wildfire. The trail led past a small pond with several ducks before ascending to South Matthieu Lake in approximately three miles.

At South Matthieu Lake, the majestic North and South Sisters stood proudly above the water. I was heartened to observe that the wildfire had spared the area surrounding the lake, making it a truly delightful location for a snack and a well-deserved rest.

To enhance the experience, I ventured westward along a trail that led to North Matthieu Lake before rejoining the PCT. The route took me through expansive meadows and past several colossal, glacier-carved boulders. Returning to the trailhead, I deliberately slowed my pace to fully appreciate the scenic beauty. It was, without a doubt, a memorable hiking experience.
