A Winter Hike from Champoeg to Butteville

Oregon History

When did Oregon decide to become a USA territory instead of remaining part of Canada? I decided to visit the site of the pivotal vote.

Champoeg Park sits on the Willamette River, about 20 miles south of Portland. I started by taking a short loop westward along the river. After returning to the historical pavilion where the decisive 52-50 vote took place in 1843, I hiked east on a cinder path, which soon became a paved lane along the river.

Butteville

After a detour to an 1845 pioneer woman’s gravesite, I explored a nature hike loop. The two-mile trek behind La Butte led to Butteville, a scenic little town on the Willamette River. The Butteville Store, which opened in 1863, provided a welcome break before I began my return to the trailhead. It was a very pleasant 8 1/2-mile hike.

The flood of 1861 convinced the town at Champoeg to move to a higher elevation
