Sherars Falls
After a very enjoyable hike in the Criterion Tract south of Maupin, I drove downstream along the Deschutes River to Sherars Falls. It’s a 15-foot waterfall with powerful rapids below. Tribal members use dip nets from platforms to catch salmon and steelhead from the rocky embankments above the rapids. The scenic beauty and rich cultural history make Sherars Falls a truly unique destination.

White RIver Falls
After leaving the Deschutes River, a short drive led to White River Falls State Park, one of Oregon’s best-kept secrets. The White River dramatically plunges 90 feet over a basalt shelf. A challenging quarter-mile trail winds through the canyon, ultimately leading to a historic hydroelectric power plant situated at the base of the falls. This power plant was operational from 1910 to 1960.
Originating from Mt. Hood, the White River meanders approximately 50 miles before emptying into the Deschutes River, just three miles downstream from the stunning White River Falls.
