Summit of Round Mountain in the Goat Rocks Wilderness

Goat Rocks

A pleasant and moderate climb leads to the 6,000-foot summit of Round Mountain, nestled within the Goat Rocks Wilderness. The 4,300-foot Trailhead, located six miles from Rimrock Lake, marks the beginning of this rewarding adventure.
The trail meanders through an open ponderosa pine forest for several miles, gradually ascending towards the summit. Here, reminiscent of old wildfire lookout posts, the panoramic vistas seem to stretch endlessly in every direction, offering an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts.

Pika

There are typically pikas to be spotted in the rocks near the summit. They are very curious and sometimes make good posers for photographs.

On the west end of the summit area are spectacular views of Goat Rocks and Mt. Rainier. To the north, the Rattlesnake Mountains can be seen, including Mt. Aix, which has been a long-time favorite of mine to summit. McNeil Peak can also be seen in all its majesty.

All in all, the hike is 5.5 miles in length with 1,700 feet of elevation gain. It is an enjoyable trek on a nice summer day.
