Magic Mile and Pacific Crest Trail

Timberline Lodge

On a beautiful day, I drove to Timberline Lodge at 5,900 feet. After putting on the daypack and grabbing the camera, I went to the Pacific Crest Trail, a short distance above the lodge.

While standing there, a group of backpackers passed me on the way north. And, a golden-mantled peered at me from a hole in a rock nearby. It was clearly looking for a handout.

I soon left the PCT and climbed slowly up the side of the mountain to the 7,000-foot beginning of the Palmer Lift. There was a large building there with picnic tables. The views of the mountain were spectacular.

Then it was time for some exploring. I returned to the PCT and hiked part of the way to Big Zigzag Canyon. The wildflowers were abundant, and several more golden-mantled poppies popped up. One already had a treat from a previous hiker. Then it was time to return to Timberline Lodge.

A great way to spend a summer day!
