A Fun Outing on Humbug Mountain

Humbug Mountain

In mid-September, I returned to the Oregon Coastal Mountains. One thing I really like about this hike is how easy the access is to the trailhead.

I parked right off Highway 26 on a logging road. It was a bit of a challenge to find a spot that wasn’t too cramped, but it was worth it.

The low clouds made the views a bit hazy, but it still made for a lovely day out.

Recreation Permit

There’s a locked gate on the logging road, about one-tenth mile from Highway 26. Hikers can enjoy the area with a free recreational permit. I’ve often seen elk, deer, coyotes, and other animals in the area. This time, though, the clouds were so thick that I couldn’t spot any in the meadows.

The hike is pretty short, about 5 1/2 miles round-trip, and it mostly follows logging roads. But, it can be a bit steep and rocky in some spots.

The 2,500-foot summit has some communication gear. The views would have been amazing if the clouds had cleared. Still, the tops of the coastal mountains peeked out like they were riding the ocean waves.
