A World Class Waterfalls Hike in the Columbia River Gorge

Wahkeena Falls

On a nice summer day, I took a loop hike that would have thrilled waterfall enthusiasts everywhere. I saw 620-foot Multnomah Falls, 242-foot Wahkeena Falls, 30-foot Fairy Falls, 80-foot Hidden Falls, 90-foot Weisendanger Falls, 50-foot Dutchman Falls, and 15-foot Little Multnomah Falls. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Along the way I spotted shamrock-shaped leaves of wood sorrel, which made me think of leprechauns. Plus, I hiked through a forest with bright green foliage showcasing the ongoing recovery from the 2017 Eagle Creek wildfire.

After parking at the Multnomah Falls Lodge, I followed a trail near the old Columbia River Highway to Wahkeena Falls. For the next mile, the trail climbed steeply up the canyon next to Wahkeena Creek until I reached the beautiful Fairy Falls. It was such a peaceful spot with an old bench and some mature cedar trees near the meeting of two streams.

I soon arrived at the Devils Rest Trail, having climbed 1,500 feet since leaving Wahkeena Falls. I paused to admire the new growth of underbrush that had sprung up since the wildfire. It was clear that many of the mature Douglas Firs and Cedars would survive, but the smaller trees wouldn’t.

As I continued on the Wahkeena Trail, I entered the deep Multnomah Creek Gorge. The 1.8-mile, 1,100-foot descent from there to the Multnomah Falls Lodge was truly spectacular. The steep slope of Multnomah Creek created one waterfall after another. And, the last mile of the trail wound its way down the cliffs right next to Multnomah Falls. It was a beautiful day, no doubt about it.
