Summer Visit to LL Stewart State Park

Oregon Coastal Mountains

It was a nice summer day. I decided to take an outing to the Coastal Mountains. L.L. “Stub” Stewart Memorial State Park was the destination. It is situated next to the Banks-Vernonia Rail Trail.

I drove to the upper parking area, used primarily by equestrians.

The hike to Unfit Settlement View is n enjoyable climb through the woods. After that, I headed downhill until I reached the trail to Skycar Viewpoint. From there, you can spot Boomscooter Pond nestled in the woods below. I thought it would be fun to explore further and hike down to the pond.

One of the joys of hiking in the Park is that many of the trails and features have names that hark back to the days of the old-time railroads—like skycar, boomscooter, caddywhomper, and more.
