Oak Island is located in the middle of Sturgeon Lake which is enclosed within Sauvie Island, about 15 crow-flying miles northwest of Portland. A dirt road leads across a dike providing access to the trailhead.
A three-mile trail meanders around the northern perimeter of the Island. After circling around the end of the Island, I stopped to watch an eagles’ nest in an old oak tree. A few weeks ago there had been a young eaglet in the nest.
Then, I got lucky. A young adult bald eagle came in to land by the nest. With their wings spread and talons open, it makes for a truly impressive sight. I watched it preen for a while in the sunshine before heading back to the car.
What a nice day to be out in nature.
