Winter in Portland

Amazingly enough, Anna hummingbirds overwinter in Portland. We have them come to our feeders year around.

In mid-February we had a fairly severe winter storm move into the area for a few days. The temperature dropped below freezing, even during the day, and we had a few inches of snow. And, being Portland, we had some freezing rain too.

Soon we had eight or nine hummingbirds at a time on the feeders. It was amazing. They’re usually very territorial.

Thankfully, they go into torpor during the night. But, as soon as it began to lighten up in the morning, they were ready to eat.
