Scenes from Northwest Oregon

Lee Wooden Park

In early summer I made three outing near Portland. The first was Lee Wooden Park in the Coastal Mountains. This is a pleasant area near a stream. It’s a good spot for seeing deer, songbirds and wildflowers.

Trailhead.

Vernonia Lake

In the small town of Vernonia is an idyllic country pond. It’s about one mile in circumference. At one time it was a logging pond for a long shuttered saw mill. Now it’s picturesque and a popular fishing spot.

Collowash River

The Collowash River is a tributary to the Upper Clackamas River southeast of Portland. Before huge changes made by the ODF&W, it was a great summer steelhead fishery. I caught many a bright steelhead in the River at one time. Now it is just a pretty place to visit.

On a sad note, there was a huge wildfire a few years ago in the Clackamas River Drainage. Driving along the Clackamas River east of Estacada, one sees many signs of rebirth. Fireweed and other plants are growing under the burnt trees left by the fire.
