Pumpkins
Sauvie Island is about 10 crow-flying miles northwest of Portland. It is the largest island along the Columbia River at 33 square-miles, and one of the largest river islands in the United States. To put it into context, Manhattan Island is about 23 square-miles in size.
The island is predominantly farmland, but the north end is a wildlife refuge. It is a popular place for picking pumpkins, hiking and birdwatching.

Lots of pumpkins and fun drivers too

Sandhill Cranes
In the fall greater sandhill cranes are frequently spotted on Sauvie Island. This majestic crane is Oregon’s tallest bird. On an early December visit to the area near Oak Island, I spotted two of them in a field. They’re always fun to watch.
