I returned to Oak Island on a nice afternoon for a chance to stretch my legs. It’s located in the middle of Sturgeon Lake which is enclosed within Sauvie Island, about 15 crow-flying miles northwest of Portland. A dirt road leads across a dike providing access to the trailhead.
A three-mile trail meanders around the northern perimeter of the Island. I again spotted a bald eagle sitting on a huge old nest located in the top of a tall oak tree. It never left the nest so the photo opportunities were few. I suspect the fledglings have hatched but didn’t spot any sticking their heads up.
Continuing the hike, I spotted a cheerful Western tanager. Always a fine sight to see. Truly a nice day to be out in nature.
